Thanks to
Captain Wang and his wife Erin, I had the privilege of boarding the
US
aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt with our friends Jen and Stephen.
It made me think of the
first time I heard the phrase bucket list: "Many know of the
legendary Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz, but what fewer know is his quest
to do 107 things before he dies...By most 28-year-old’s standards, he
aspired to some lofty goals — be a guest on the Tonight Show, have dinner at
the White House, land a plane on an aircraft carrier, coach
Notre Dame Football, win a national championship and meet the Pope."
Well, I didn't quite land a plane on the carrier, but I got to board one and
see the planes. It was a great cocktail reception, which I am proud to
have at least partially funded. You cannot help be impressed when
touring such a display of power; I swelled with pride when our national
anthem played as the color guard slowly lowered on the elevator, with a jet
as the backdrop - can't buy those type of props! FYI, the cost of building the ship was $4.5 billion.
That made me think of this article:
If Facebook's Purchase of WhatsApp Seemed Steep at $19 Billion, Think of
What You Could Buy Instead, which mentioned an aircraft carrier as one
of the alternatives. Perhaps the only thing cooler that made me feel
very patriotic was my tour of the
Kennedy Space Center.
"Sorry sir, please step back," says the navy guard with a gun. "Ok. Can I take a picture?" I ask sheepishly.
